We are reading "Little House on the Prairie" out loud together as a family. It is really very sad that it is touted as a "girl" book. There are plenty of adventures with wild wolves, skunk-skin clad Indians, and loosing Jack the bulldog in the icy river -- to keep even the boy-est boy on the edge of his seat. It is a fabulous tale of a family with a strong work ethic, and a wonder and appreciation for all things simple and meaningful. There are very detailed descriptions of how they did things so self-sufficiently out on the prairie: built their house, cooked their food, and improvised when they did not have things they needed. There are adventures of just enough intensity for any age to stay interested, but not terrorized. Three of us had tears in our eyes when Jack got lost- then we all shivered with excitement when he came back. L is re-enacting scenes in her daily play... and D is asking about "Baby Carrie". N is playing his guitar like Pa played his fiddle, and J sailed ahead reading it in his own free reading time- finished that three hundred some odd paged book in about 4 days. Then he bugged me until we could go to the library to check out the next book in the series- "Farmer Boy". (He easily devoured that book, too! Keeping good reading material ready for him is almost as important as my weekly meal plan!)

My mom got me the series when I was a little girl and I can remember reading them over and over way up in my teenage years. I loved those books! My daughter still has the box set in her room! Thanks for the memory!

It's always been a dream of mine to read them with my kids someday, and reading your post has made me even more excited to do that! So glad to hear that the kids are enjoying them :)
