We just finished a great project. We studied metamorphosis, and obtained a hands on project from our own back yard. A few weeks ago we discovered baby caterpillars all over the parsley in the herb garden. So, we built a butterfly house out of a giant oatmeal box. We covered the front with mesh so we could see in. Inside we placed a vase of parsley with two baby caterpillars. We watched them munch from tiny 1/4 inch long babies to 2 inch long caterpillars. This provided us great opportunity to make observations, measure their growth every few days, and watch how much they munched! Sometimes you could even hear the munching! They both built a chrysalis on the sturdy sticks we provided, and one has hatched into a beautiful butterfly. Using our research books we classified it as a Black Swallowtail Butterfly. The whole process took about one month. It was facinating, and we all enjoyed watching God's amazing creativity right before our eyes. We snapped a few shots before letting "Itsy Bitsy" fly away- it is a bit difficult to see through the mesh- but perhaps you can still enjoy the pics.

The kids must have really enjoyed this project! Good for you! Did you get any of the parsley to eat, or did the caterpillars eat it all?
