Book Worms

The book worms are munching. We come home from the library with a bulging bag and some besides. They all get read, and some get ranked as favorites.

A few weeks ago we did a drama of the book "The Carrot Seed". Josiah narrated by reading the book.


Here is Lily with her latest favorite book from the library: Madeline, by Ludwig Bemelmans. We read this book at least five times every day. (Usually at her request, but the boys enjoy it too, and sometimes it is their request, too.) It has earned a coveted spot on the "Must Have for our own Collection" list. (hint, hint-for the Christmas list!) We almost all know it by heart. Hearing a two year old quote "Nurse, its an appendix!" is sure to bring a smile of amusement to any one's face.

The other book that runs a close second in the "favorites" department is the Mary Englebreit's Mother Goose Book. Who'd guess that those age old sing song-y verses would so strongly captivate little minds. M.E.'s illustrations add a lot of charm, of coarse. We have had the book for two weeks, and it now falls open to Lily's favorite page: Ring Around the Rosies.

We have learned about Komodo dragons, elephants, trucks that smash things. We have read some folk tales about the Five Chinese Brothers, The Baker's Dozen and the Quail Song. And some good ole' classics like Harry the Dirty Dog, and The Grouchy Ladybug.

There is something like "Pavlov's Dog" going on here. Whenever Phil or I sit down for just a minute- in the blink of an eye there is a little snugly body holding a book whispering "Will you read this to me??" Then they all come running.
