Science Experiment

We are finishing up our study of the human body, and today we read about hair and nails. Yes, they are dead cells- but they are super strong for being dead! Today we did a fun science experiment that demonstrates just how strong they are.

Tape a strand of hair that is at least six inches long onto a plastic bag. While holding the hair, and add marbles or coins to the bag- one at a time. See how many can be added before the hair breaks! (Our hair held up 11 marbles! The kids were thrilled that the hair was stronger than the tape- which kept coming undone.)

Some people's hair will be able to "hold" more marbles than others. :)

This idea came from a great book we picked up from the library. It has all sorts of fun simple experiments, and has been a great resource of human body facts. It is geared to lower elementary.
