Our hens have begun laying and we have been collecting three or four of these beauties every day. It has been so much fun.
So much of our backyard chicken endeavor has not gone according to plan. Of the 12 original chicks, only four grew up to be laying hens. Two more were meat birds and the other 6 grew up to be roosters! Even though we originally were against keeping a rooster, we decided to keep one rooster to see if we could hatch chicks. So ten eggs are nestled in a box under a heat lamp in the basement and we shall see what comes in a few more days!
In the meantime, our birds have been so quirky fun...easy to take care of, and they add such a homey atmosphere to our backyard.
Now that we have only one rooster, it has been fun watching how he takes care of his "hens". He shows them where to eat, knows where all his ladies are at all times, and if one wanders he goes hunting for her.
The whole experience has been amazing and such a great learning experience for our whole family.

They are really neat! I love the rooster! I'll take a picture of all of them and see if I can paint them!
